The Artisan Depot featured artist for September 2007 WATERCOLORIST
PATRICIA ANN UNDERWOOD The work of Cowan
watercolor artist Patricia Underwood is featured at The Artisan Depot
during September. Underwood's mastery of watercolor is evident in her
expressive subject matter which includes flowers, bears, marine life, and
the clear crisp aspen trees of Flagstaff, AZ (where she resided for 20
years before returning to her native Tennessee to settle in Cowan). While living in Arizona,
Underwood became interested in watercolor after taking an education
course. She became so proficient that she was asked to teach a watercolor
class through the community schools program. Inspired by works of
Georgia O'Keefe, Underwood enrolled in a class at the renown Ghost Ranch,
a conference center located in Abiqui, NM. While there, she became so
enamored with the southwest that she returned the next year with her
students. She continues to offer a workshop there annually for her
Flagstaff students and friends along with her Tennessee students and those
interested in experiencing the beauty of Ghost Ranch. Since returning to
Tennessee, Underwood continues to pursue her interest in the arts. She
became involved with the Franklin County Arts Guild and was elected
president of the Guild in 2004. She served in that position for three
years. In 2006 Underwood opened
the Cowan Community School, a nonprofit school offering classes in art,
dance, drama, crafts and more. She currently teaches watercolor classes
through the school. Underwood has also
started work in pastels and bead weaving (stitching beads together with
needle and thread) to her creative endeavors. Some of this work can also
be seen at The Artisan Depot. The Artisan Depot is
